Medieval Fantasy Writers: Fantasy or Historical Fiction?

I love writing historical fantasy and I’m looking forward to the conference! I’m wondering, when writing medieval fantasy or fantasy settings based at least partially on real cultures (like Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings or Jordan’s The Wheel of Time), do y’all tend to lean one direction or another? In other words, do you lean more towards the fantasy elements, or do you research specific cultures like crazy?
