A well-reasoned counterpoint to my "leaning in" on AI

It’s always good to read and try to understand the ideas that run contrary to yours. Paul Kingsnorth is no doubt a better writer than I am, likely a better writer than I will ever be. I’ve been reading his essays over the last few years, and still need to read his new book.

Paul names his “Butlerian Jihad”-like manifesto “Writers Against AI”

This essay came out today and he makes a pretty strong case (or “story” as he calls it) for the dangers of AI. As Thomas has said, “He’s not wrong”. At our small group, we’ve (okay, “I’ve”) talked about implications several times.

The biggest danger I see is that generations will grow up never having done the hard work of learning things for themselves. In an ironic move, I used ChatGPT to look up this quote from Jurassic Park:

“You didn’t earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don’t take any responsibility for it.”

Anyway, this is worth a close read.
