What I'm comfortable using AI for in my work

I wanted to share a little of what I do and what pieces let me do things I probably wouldn’t have done otherwise.

Like most everyone here, I have lots of irons in various fires beyond writing: family, church, and day job responsibilities. I use AI tools for everything from my day job (software developer) to helping me plan my new deck to organizing a new Bible study class I am creating.

For my writing, I use it extensively to:

  • organize my story development, research, and drafts

  • brainstorm and evaluate ideas (but as of today, not to write drafts)

  • first level evaluation of ideas and drafts for structure, consistency, etc

  • manage my newsletter and blog, including researching photos, links, and more

  • read my email to capture and organize feedback from my newsletter

  • assist with learning from online courses, YouTube videos, articles

Tools I use in conjunction with AI for my writing in particular:

  • Claude code, Codex, Grok

  • Obsidian
I have separate vaults for each major area in my life, just a single one right now for my author stuff — but would use a separate one for any major new area (e.g. children’s stories, non-fiction)

  • MCPs to:

    • read my drafts in Scrivener

    • capture and organize transcripts from video CC data

    • work with Kit

    • use Chrome

    • read my local Apple Mail

    • (I would use the Facebook ads manager MCP, but I can’t get it to connect yet)

I can envision using it for a lot more in the coming months and years. It really is a productivity multiplier once you get comfortable with it. If you are new to all of this, just build your patterns one piece at a time — discard what doesn’t work for you, try new things once in a while.
