Men in publishing

My experience might be dated, but when I graduated from college in 1979 with an English major, I wanted to work in publishing. But the entry-level job was secretarial, and the pay was about $11,000. I could type well, but I couldn’t see living in NYC at that salary. I was able to get an entry-level professional job at Columbia University instead, at a salary of $18,000.

The secretarial-entry and the low salary might explain why there are few men in publishing.
