YA Historical Fiction at Homeschool Conventions
I have a book that was written for the homeschool history buffs. It’s academically much higher of content and interest level than many other books. It’s for juniors and seniors in high school, plus college age people.
The content leans in on the historical context of the Byzantine times, and the topics are authentic to the time period but include the Chalcedon council, Monophysite controversy, the problem of evil, and learning how to deal with suffering as a young person. Includes Nika riot and ancient China elements. It’s a coming of age story. Did really well when it first launched.
So in using the Author Toolbox, going back and forth, I initially was going to change my market to the adult market (to hit Christian post-high schoolers). But because I’m right there on the line—perfect for homeschool nerds but advanced for normal high schoolers, the book is hard to market with Amazon Ads. Author Toolbox correctly targeted my book at the Classical Conversations audience.
My initial launch was through a Kickstarter, and transitioning to getting reviews on Amazon has been a challenge.
One of the recommendations from common sense and Author Toolbox is to sell at homeschool conventions. However, since I live abroad (in Turkey), these efforts will need to be very fine-tuned. I need to perhaps get bookmarks into the goodie bags in the meanwhile.
But I’m posting on collaboration in the hope that there is a way to piggy-back on another Historical Fiction author for homeschoolers who does go to the conferences. I know sometimes there are limits on sharing a booth—but we might be able to find conventions without those limits.
My dream is that there is a way to get Author Media authors networked in order to tap into the homeschool market and conferences with us promoting each other’s books, taking turns going to the conferences.
I also write YA Sci-fi.
Anyhow, if you have ideas about this, please comment. If you go to conferences and know about the collaboration rules for booth rental, please comment.
