Abbreviating the names of books of the BIble

In most of the writing I do, which is academic, the names of the books of the BIble are almost always abbreviated. I can expect my audience to know what I meant or look it up. I can’t depend on a general reader to know what I mean. Do I need to spell out the name of each book, or can I simply put them in a list of abbreviations at the start of the book? I don’t want to put any hindrances in the way of the reader, but I also don’t want to waste a bunch of space by spelling the names out. Right now, I’m forcing myself to write out the names, even thought that’s contrary to my regular practice, as well as CMOS/Turabian. Thanks.
