How to separate writing from editing

So far in my journey through the 5-Year Plan (still new, approaching the end of Y1M2) I've learned that I am absolutely not a pantser—as in, if I don't know where the story ends, I tend to get really frustrated / discouraged during the writing process.

My stories usually start with a vague (or sometimes, very vivid) picture of the climax I'm shooting for. And I actually really like discovering how to get there in the outlining phase of my story. I'm still fairly loose with it though, so as I'm working through a scene in my outline I might organically change it to an entirely different scene instead. Regardless of whether it's a planned scene or on-the-fly, I'm always thinking of what I write in terms of the overall progression toward the pre-determined climax.

So, my questions are:

  • Is it wrong to do it that way? Should I be shutting off that part of my brain that constantly strives to fit all the pieces together?

  • How do you personally separate the writing phase from your editing phase? Do you find a healthy mix of both on any given day? Or do you assign one day for writing and an entirely different day for editing?
