Italics for Inner Monologue

I was listening to the Christian Publishing Show podcast episode “How to Tighten Your Writing with Angela Hunt”, and she says that “Nobody writing contemporary fiction is using italics for inner monologue anymore. You just write what the character is thinking because you’re in that person’s head.” I understand about the POV, but I had not heard this about italics before. And checking several books published in the last four years, a Karen Kingsbury being among them, I noted they all still use italics for thoughts. I agree with it being unnecessary for first-person because you are literally reading their thoughts, but I feel like it helps to distinguish what they are thinking in third-person POV. And if Ms. Kingsbury is writing this way, why shouldn’t it be okay for us to as well?
