Men's opinions on romantic subplots in SFF?
My literature professor remarked offhand yesterday that he feels betrayed whenever he picks up a SFF book and realizes it has a romantic subplot. I’m curious, is that experience shared by other men?
Reading male SFF authors, I definitely notice less focus on the romance… but romantic subplots are still there (thinking of Eragon, Brandon Sanderson, even LOTR). Do male readers (not to over-generalize) generally dislike that, or is it okay as long as it’s kept minimal?
I write for a primarily female audience… but I also see a huge dearth of good fiction targeted at men. As a feminine woman, I don’t think I’m the best person to fill that gap (I could see other women doing it, it’s just not right for my personality), but I still want to write in a way that is hospitable and welcoming to male readers.
Anyway… I would love any thoughts on that.
