Minimal or more descriptors of people, places and things
I am in a fierce debate with some friends….okay not that fierce but it has sparked some questions on how readers view descriptions of people, places and things in novels.
Do you prefer more vivid descriptions or do you prefer more vague descriptions in the novels you read?
I am one of those people where my mind fills in the gaps of what I personally want to see, regardless of what the descriptions says. My mind creates images in my brain when i read, as do most of my family. However several of my friends have been reading my short stories and novel drafts and they have asked for more descriptions of people, place and things. I tend to write more vague descriptions because of how i prefer the novels i read to have less descriptions but i understand in today’s day and age that more descriptions might be beneficial. I’m trying to decide how much I should go back and add if any.
Since i know everyone is different when it comes to how their imagination i thought I’d ask a wider group on their preferences as readers! And how, as a writer, you navigate your preference that may differ from your Timmothy/audience.
Thank you in advance for taking the time to answer!
Edit just for clarity: It’s been rather split between my family members and friends on who wants more or less description! Hence the debate!
