Quoting the author: past or present tense?

I’m writing a book on the Sermon on the Mount. When quoting Jesus should, I use past or present tense: “Jesus said in the sermon on the mount” OR “Jesus says in the Sermon on the Mount”? I’ve received editorial advice both ways. What’s your opinion and why?
