Reading in your Genre

In a recent podcast, Thomas said that authors should read in their Genre. My question is, how broadly does that apply? I write sci-fi in a retro futuristic world of the 1800s. This is very specificand i haven'tfound anything really similar. Do I read at the Sci fi level or should I niche down a bit more?
