Splitting a Book in 2
I’ve written myself into a bit of a pickle. I just finished a draft of the second book in what was meant to be a trilogy. It’s a great feeling, till I realized I had written well over 100,000 words. I’m writing action/adventure historical fiction for YA, which has a target word count of 80,000. I can definitely do some substantial edits to get my word count down, but I’m wondering if it’s still going to be too long. It’s twice as long as my first book.
Book 1 is 57,000 words. Currently book 2 is 116,000 words. I know I have a lot of editing to do yet, but everyone I talk to says I should split it into 2 books. It makes sense from a marketing standpoint, but not from a story standpoint. I would almost have to rewrite the larger story to make sure each book had its own satisfying conclusion and arc progression.
This decision is really derailing my editing. Does anyone have some advice on what I could do?
