24 year old protagonist for 12-18yo target audience?
I’m stuck. Like finger-in-an-epoxy-bottle stuck. I’ve spent the last week banging my head against a wall looking for comp titles and I’m still coming up dry. But one thing I’ve noticed while Googling and searching Amazon and reading bits of books, is that there are a few books out there with older protagonists (21-25), that were written (so Amazon says) for 12-18 year old audiences. Is this common? Can I do it? Would I call the book YA, or would it be technically adult but marketed to the YA audience?
Here’s my logline: A junior astronaut must solve an ancient murder before the moonbase he discovered fires missiles that will kill millions.
Here’s my audience: My target reader is a homeschool teen boy, age 11-18, who is interested in science, Minecraft, LEGO, and humor. He might be into programming, Chess club and astronomy. He loved the PERCY JACKSON series by Rick Riordan, as well as the RAISING DRAGONS series by Bryan Davis, both of which are set in modern-day North America, but isn’t a big fan of fantasy in general. He might want to be an astronaut one day, or maybe fixing a lawnmowers for a living sounds like more fun right now. He’s a fun nerd.
