Advice needed for next steps

I'm a bit stuck in trying to figure out what I should focus on next in my writing journey, and I'm wondering if anyone can help me. It’s probably hard to speak into some one else’s life, but any advice, suggestions, thoughts are very welcome!!

So far, I have managed to (discovery) write several very messy novels, using the slow-drafting method, forcing myself to keep going till I reached the end. They need a lot of revision. Recently I came across Jessica Brody’s newest book “Page One to Done” where she describes her fast-drafting method to get a first draft done. I’m excited about trying it.

I’m just not sure if I should jump to another “new” novel or force myself to go through the revisions on a novel draft I already have.

I've learned a lot since I wrote the earlier manuscripts, and I know they will need a lot of work on the developmental level, even on the ideas level. I'm especially weak on the character arcs, as I mostly "discovery" wrote a lot of plot and hoped the characters would reveal themselves to me as I went along. Which they mostly didn't. Trying to figure out their flaws/wounds etc has been a torturous process of trying to force a character to fit the plot I made. I've done it all backwards, I think.

The problem I'm facing is that I'm not sure if I should:

a) pick the best novel draft I have and revise it

b) fast draft a brand-new novel using everything I’ve learned since I wrote those earlier novels (especially trying to make this one start with character first)

Should I start completely fresh on a new novel with all the things I've learned? The daunting part about starting fresh is that blank page. Brainstorming is scary for me. Coming up with a one-sentence pitch is terrifying, and I'm not sure how much I can plan out beforehand. I haven't been very successful in the past. But I'm trying to break out of this "discovery writing" mode, because so far it has only produced a pile of mediocre novels with very weak endings.

My other concern about starting completely fresh is that I'll end up in the exact same place with another messy draft that needs a lot of revision. Do I really need another first draft, or do I need to learn how to take the next step of embracing the mess and revising what I've got?

I'm wondering if I could use those early drafts as a kind of giant brainstorm, and build a strong story idea out of it and then fast-draft a new version of the story, using the ideas/characters/setting I've already created. Or will that just tangle me up in a giant mess of things that weren't working before?

All this is to say, I need help! Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Thank you!!

Amanda
