AI content-attestation for our books 🤖

I want to discuss an industry need I’m wrestling with, and I’d love your feedback.

Like lab-made diamonds, AI generated content has grown from a niche market to the default MO, almost overnight.

The question is not whether we read+write AI content, but to what degree.

As a reader, I really want to know to what degree the book in my lap is AI generated. As a writer, I want the same thing, because I want to be transparent and honest with my readers regarding my use of AI.

So, I propose an honor system, where authors self-certify their AI usage. I’ve come up with 5 categories, which I believe provides maximum coverage, with minimal complexity.

a) 100% AI free

b) human-written content, AI copy-level edits

c) human-written content, with deep/developmental/thematic AI guidance

d) AI written manuscript, prompted by human

e) Mixed AI-written and human-written content

Questions for you:
- is this system attractive to you as a reader? Why/why not?
- is this system attractive to you as a writer? Why/why not?
- Do you suggest modifying or adding to the 5 categories?
- any other feedback?

Thanks a bunch!
