Author IP Ecosystem--Future of Publishing?

What do you think about the argument advanced in the article below: that authors would be well advised to build an ecosystem?

I know the concept isn’t new to most of you, but I wonder if there aren’t certain qualifications to be made or questions to be asked, such as “What kind of authors? For what kind of readers? What if you intend to write standalone books? Or literary fiction? What if your audience is primarily those 50 and older, whose reading habits have never needed an ecosystem"?

Seems to me that this is a terrific strategy for commercial fiction (especially spec fiction), career authors (as in primary income source), and young readers. But maybe not for everyone? Interested in how you see yourselves.
