Free alternative for MS Word/MS Office

I posted this as a comment on another thread- but based on the comments in that thread, I thought this might be helpful to all:

For those who like to avoid the highly questionable business practices of Microsoft/Google/Apple but want MS Word functionality. . . I have used Libreoffice for years.

It is open-source and free as in freedom of speech (and free as in $$ though I highly recommend donating to open source projects that you love). And it is a direct replacement for the MS Office suite including MS Word.

I have worked with a professional editor who uses MS Word with no cross-compatibility issues. Comments, markups, and track changes work perfectly back and forth (just remember to format the manuscript as .docx when you create it and save it).
