How and where do you sign your books?

I’m going to be mailing some copies of my book with signatures. I understand that convention is to sign on the main title page. I’ll be addressing mine to the recipient and adding a short comment. It looks like I have room for that.

Some also cross out the printed author name. Is this what you do? I’m most squeamish about crossing out my name. Hah. It feels like I’m defacing it.
