Separate Amazon Account for Kindle? (7/12 Update)
Hi all, I’m looking for advice on creating a new Amazon account, using my custom author domain for the email address I will use to set it up. Is this a recommended practice? I want to keep my author account, including any associated costs, separate from my personal account. Is this something that if I don’t do now it may come back to cause a problem? I’m looking ahead, and would like to know what others’ experiences and perspectives are.
Related to this is the difficulty I’ve been having setting up my email client, eMClient on a 2020 M1 Macbook Air, with the custom domain. I’ve done so, but the new email address goes to the same Inbox as my personal iCloud email. Neither what I want nor expected. I bought the domain at GoDaddy, but have it hosted on iCloud+ as a Custom Domain, and created the email address there. Long story short, it’s not behaving as I assumed it would behave, having set up eMClient with Gmail as a separate account, with its own folder structure, etc. I suspect it’s the nature of the mail servers, but I’m not certain. If anyone can shed light on this as well, it’s much appreciated!
Thanks!
Edit for clarity: I’ve just bought a Kindle device, have no KDP account, and have yet to register the device on the question of doing so with either a new, “author” account, or my current personal Amazon account, which is how I purchased it. I’m looking to use Kindle Unlimited as well, since my current issue is trying to read more! My free trial is under the personal Amazon account, and if I can change that over as well, I would.
Update, 7/12/2026:
Thank you everyone for your help. I’ve since created a new Amazon account with my author email, registered the new Kindle to that account, set up wifi, purchased a case, purchased an audiobook, purchased a book, set up Bluetooth, and began reading and listening. To be clear, this is a normal purchasing/customer account at Amazon, not a KDP nor any other type of business account—just one registered with my author email. No LLC, no business address, no separate financials/payment options, etc., at this point.
I now have two Kindle Unlimited subscriptions. Oops. One is on the account I registered the device with, the author account, but a separate one is on that of my personal account, where I bought it. (This is clear since the two KU free trials I now have are one for 30 days, and one for three months.) For my purposes, I would have been better off to have set up the author purchasing account and then bought the Kindle device to get a single KU free trial and program on the one author account. Which may be an excessive separation of church and state, but oh well! We’ll see how it works.
