Sketchy emails

I have received 2 emails supposedly from Thomas that seem sketchy to me. First of all, they are sent to my Gmail but lack the dot between my first and last names, which Gmail still recognizes as my address, but this usually happens because my address got mixed up somehow years ago with someone whose name is the same as mine. Emails I receive like that are often what I consider spam. So, red flags:

The first one was a warm congratulatory thank you and welcome to subscribing to Author Social’s newsletters and promising me I would soon be selling many more books: “Way to go! You’ve subscribed to get the Novel Marketing podcast emails.” I had not subscribed to anything; I’ve been getting Thomas’ emails for some time now.

Also, the second email, which I received this morning, is offering me a free course as a thank you gift: How To Make Your Author Website Amazing.

The emails are from newsletter at authormedia dot com. They have Thomas’ picture and signature at the bottom. I see I have gotten emails from there before announcing a drawing for a Macbook Neo, which I responded to. Maybe that’s where my new “subscription” came from.

They seem very genuine but I am skeptical. Maybe I’m just paranoid. Am I right to not trust these? Thomas, can you weigh in? Thanks!
