Text to Speech on a Mac Advice

I’d like to use the Mac’s inbuilt text reader to read my novel to help me proofread. I’ve tried various enhanced and premium US & British male and female voices, but even after tuning for speed, I find issues like unnatural rhythm and occasional unclear pronunciation too distracting to listen to for long. Any suggestions, possible voice recommendations, or tuning recommendations from Mac users? Or perhaps even a different app to suggest?
