Updates to Amazon affiliate links: Now allowed in emails?

I was listening to Writing Off Social: The Podcast today and heard @Sandy Cooper and @Mary Kathryn Tiller say that Amazon has updated its affiliate policies so affiliate links can now be used in email newsletters. The Amazon Associates terms say this:

You may include Special Links in emails, SMS and direct messaging from your social media Sites; provided, that such communications are solicited (i.e., opted into by the receiving customer) and are otherwise in compliance with the Agreement, the Trademark Guidelines, and the Amazon Brand Usage Guidelines.

Basically, the email recipient has to have opted in to receive your email, and you have to clearly mark your links as affiliate. These terms were apparently updated in March.

However, one of Amazon’s help topics still says links are not allowed in emails. I’m guessing this help topic wasn’t updated when the terms were, but can anyone here weigh in on whether it’s safe to proceed with using Amazon affiliate links in my newsletters within the new guidelines? I’m tagging @Thomas Umstattd Jr. here.
