Wordfence?

I am using the free version of Wordfence on my website (Bluehost/Wordpress/Divi setup) because I believed their claim they were blocking bad guys. Of course, they’d do a better job if I moved to the paid version according to their frequent emails. Question: is Wordfence helpful for my website or just bogging it down? Do I need the paid version?
