BLB24 - #3 Homework - Zackary Russell

From Tech Timid to Tech Savvy

What is your biggest technical fear?

  • My biggest fear is setting up a reader magnet system: everything from the content, typesetting, ebook delivery mechanism, advertising, and mailing list builder. Each component of this system doesn't seem too bad, but it's doing all of it well that seems intimidating.

Which method or methods do you plan to use to manage it?

  • Read two books about short fiction

  • Take the Author Email Academy course

  • Read another book about reader magnets

  • Go through tutorial on StoryOrigin

What about technology are you grateful for?

  • I’m grateful for having a laptop and many other computers, a flexible job, and that I can work from home, especially in seasons where one of us has bad health (like me, right now).

  • I’m thankful I have support within my day job for being a fiction writer.

  • I’m thankful for my Telecommunications Engineering degree, when I originally wanted to go to college for a Creative Writing degree.

  • I’m thankful for a grandfather who always made me curious about technology.

  • I’m thankful that I have so many great photos, stories, and other files that I get to backup. Way better than dealing with the physical equivalent of all of these things.

Which backup solutions do you use?

  • I already use Time Machine for my laptop, and iCloud backup for my iPhone and iPad.

  • My iMac (main work computer) is backed up to a large USB drive, but only occasionally because it’s a bit more of a hassle.

  • I use iCloud Drive, Dropbox, and Google Drive for the majority of my files.

Which password management system do you use?

  • iCloud Keychain

Further homework:

  • I need to switch my iMac Time Capsule to an SSD.

  • I need to backup everything on all of my computers to an online service like Backblaze, or else I need to move all of my computer files into iCloud (and if so, increase my storage tier).

  • I need to use Google Drive as a third backup location for Scrivener files and other critical writing documents.

  • I would also like to backup my iCloud and Dropbox files locally.

  • I need to use better password practices.
