Homework #15 - How to Go on a Media Tour - Sue Shigemitsu

  1. Find a partner (maybe from the Community Group) and do a mock interview where you’re the interviewer and then the interviewee. Tell us how it went for both of you

  • I did this with a non-author colleague of mine. She was the interviewer, and I was the interviewee. I think I did pretty good as an interviewee, the hard part of we did this timed (10 minutes) because it was during our lunch break at work (and my colleague generously gave me her 10 minutes to do this). Another colleague happened to see the exchange and thought that I was doing well as an interviewee, which was encouraging. Sadly, I didn’t do the part where we would switch roles, so I cannot say how it could have turned out.

  • In the past I have interviewed an author at her book launch event. For that I did some research on the author by purchasing the book and reading it as well as searching Google for some ideas on what to ask authors about their new book. I enjoyed doing that and learned interesting stories and backgrounds on how the author wrote her book.

  1. Video yourself (we know, not easy) then critique yourself. Then have someone else critique your video

  • I get camera conscious and find myself say a lot of “um” or “uh,” not to mention I look away from the camera (mainly because I try to catch my train of thought while I am nervous). After 5 attempts, I have to say it is pretty good.

  1. If you’re feeling particularly bold, post your audio interview or your video piece for the group to give feedback

  • Please feel free to leave a thought, comment, or feedback on this. Thank you!
