Why do I write?

From the time my mother gifted me with a diary at age 13, I have been writing almost every day. I find it to be therapeutic. It keeps me from losing original thoughts - the ones I have “in the moment.” Writing is a great way to move from confusion to action. Eventually, I found that I could write to encourage others. I moved my writing off the pages and into public speaking.

Homework 1: What is the category of my writing?

Escape! In the past, I had a series that was under the category of education. I wrote on generations in the workplace. That 3-book series sold well - 10,000 copies. “Herding Ostriches” still sells. When I first published (traditionally), the books generated years of speaking for companies. At times, it led to consulting contracts. Now, I write for a different “Timothy.” Young men, ages 16-32. The series I just completed is Christian adventure. (Science Fiction)

Homework 2: Ten reasons people should read my book series:

  • It brings the story of the Bible to life for a new generation

  • The story is written around current events which are troubling this demographic - tamping down their hope for the future

  • To give gamers a reason to put down the mouse and go on a similar adventure with a book

  • To draw attention to current events which are taking us into dangerous territory.

  • To make Heaven into a never-ending adventure for a demographic that used to live for an adventure

  • To bring Millennials and Gen Z back to the churches/places of worship

  • To move God back into the central conversation of young men

  • I read that we are losing the young men - more suicides among this demographic. They have become the target of the media.

  • We need more heroes

  • Mostly, I wrote this series as a call to action for young men (and women). It gives the fighter within them an imaginary challenge, unending obstacles, incredibly high stakes (eternity), and a dare to change a future that has already been written.

Homework 3: How am I making time for this course?

I haven’t mastered this yet. :). I am doing my homework in the early A.M. as tax day demanded unexpected attention yesterday. I scaled back my schedule for the first two weeks of the course. I let my family and friends know that I’ll be off the grid for most of the month. Making time for passion and purpose. Exciting!
