Submission Readers and Editors Wanted — Small Press

Howdy folks!

I run The Arcanist: Fantasy Publishing, LLC, a small indie press dedicated to literary fantasy. As we ramp up our efforts for 2026, I’m looking to add a few more people to our roster of paid volunteer staff to support The Literary Fantasy Magazine.

You can learn more about the publication and our work here:

Roles Available

Submissions Reader

Our submissions readers are the front line for short fiction and poetry, reviewing incoming submissions and determining whether they should be forwarded to a Managing Editor for further consideration.

Compensation

• $0.10 per submission read

• $0.25 if a submission is ultimately accepted for publication by the Editor-in-Chief

Experience

• No prior experience required

Associate Editor

Associate Editors are added to a quarterly roster and called as needed to assist with editorial work on The Literary Fantasy Magazine. Each issue runs approximately 17,000–20,000 words.

Compensation

• One week prior to editorial, we’ll email the roster to request availability

• Two editors are selected per issue and paid $50 each

• We make a strong effort to ensure each active editor receives at least one opportunity per year

We also staff novel-length projects as needed. Compensation for these projects is tied to Kickstarter funding.

Experience

• Prior editorial and/or professional writing experience required

• Submissions Readers are frequently promoted to Associate Editor roles

If you’re interested, let me know in the comments and I’ll reach out to collect a résumé and writing sample.
