Week 4: An ever-expanding outline
This Week’s Goal: Complete the outline (step 9) for Jimmy Veritas in Escape from Battle Bot Island.
Update on Last Week’s Goal: Last week I set out to get into step 6 of the Snowflake Method. I did not, but I’m into it this week.
Snowflake Method Observations
+ It has got me thinking more deeply about my characters before drafting.
+ The method essentially has you working in two categories: plot and characters.
+ A third category I have added to my process is world building (history, rules, technology, magic systems, etc).
+ This method pairs well with other, established genre outlines/beat sheets.
Therefore: Before you begin outlining, knowing your reader and your genre is critical. Your reader and genre determine the kinds of scenes, characters, and world building elements that should be in your book. Additionally, knowing the thematic question of your book ahead of time is an excellent idea too. (In the Snowflake Method this is called the epiphany).
