Amazon Ads and KDP Rules

For those of you who have novellas or other short reads on Amazon, do you still promote them with ads? Do I need to do something different than what I would for a novel-length work?

Since my novella is now exclusive with KDP, am I forbidden to give it away through a Story Origin or other type of promo? I don’t want to be put in KDP jail.
