Another 🏆 about Building a Tribe
What actually drives community-led growth?
Here are the 5 elements we’ve seen time and again:
1. Shared Identity
“This space gets me.”
If your community doesn’t help people feel more themselves, they’ll never want to share it. People don’t invite others into neutral zones. They invite them into places that feel like home.
🧠Ask: What kind of person feels more like themselves here?
2. Memorable Moments
“This space surprised me.”
Growth doesn’t come from consistency. It comes from contrast something that jolts you enough to remember it.
Create moments that are:
Deeply personal (a DM that made them feel seen)
Unexpected (a surprise shoutout, an inside joke thread)
Sharable (a simple ritual that people talk about outside the platform)
3. Publicly Wearable Value
“This space helps me look/feel better outside of it.”
Do your members leave with:
A new insight they repeat on LinkedIn?
A quote they screenshot and send to friends?
A badge, template, tool, discussion or win they can talk about?
🧠Rule of thumb: If no one’s referencing your space in other spaces, it’s not community-led growth. It’s just retention.
4. Aligned Aspirations
“I want to be like the people here.”
The best communities don’t attract people. They aspire them they show them what they could do and become.
Your growth engine isn’t your current members. It’s the future version of your members they want to become.
5. Organic Proof Loops
If your members get wins inside your space and talk about it outside, you grow. If they get wins and don’t talk about it, you stall.
Build in:
Weekly rituals that create “I did this!” moments
Recaps members want to repost
Quotes, screenshots, visuals they can screenshot and brag about
You don’t need a referral program. You need retellable moments.

My thoughts/application for authors:
1) shared identity: these books get me
2) memorable moments: i couldn’t put the book down, then I had a chance to chat with the author!
3) publicly wearable value: quotable quotes, shareworthy twists, heartgripping characters to talk about with friends
4) aligned aspirations: here, I’d say themes and story conflicts/solutions that resonate with their worldview
5) organic proof loops: in my newsletter try to share pictures and thoughts/ contributions and notes from my readers
I’d love to get your input—how do you use these in building your newsletter community?
