Best practices for website pop-up?

I know this is heresy, but my website is built on Squarespace. When I add a pop-up to ask people to sign up for my mailing list, I have options to set the timing, how long to wait (in days) before the pop-up reappears for a returning User, etc. Do y’all have any best practices for great website pop-ups for authors? Thanks in advance.
