Hosting and Domain Questions
Hi all, I’m looking for advice in order to help make an upcoming decision. Any input is appreciated.
My website hosting is about to renew, as is an old domain. I have done nothing with the site after prematurely buying everything five years ago. (Silly me, I thought a draft was a story!) I have been unhappy with the entire experience. I’ve never gotten the email to work properly, and it’s been utterly frustrating trying to square away the hosting login, the site login, the WordPress login, the JetPack login, etc.—and they are still not squared away. I do not know if one service that I never expected to have is still using an old, spam-ridden email address I am trying to rid myself of. I’ve never done site design nor put up material. I also no longer like my old domain, and have a new one I’m considering using instead.
Do I stay with my hosting provider, Bluehost, and just switch domains? My old domain, pmgauthor.com, is clunky and has no clear tie-in to me (I don’t usually offer my middle name). The new one, philgreeley.com, has I think a clear advantage.
Or do I can it completely and start over? Sell the old domain, stop hosting a nonfunctional site, and work with the new domain when I’m ready? I have an account on Kit from the First Email Challenge course which could potentially use (I think!) the new domain.
I am not yet ready to deal with a website. I have nothing to put up, no reader magnets, no email list, etc. I’ve just begun the 5-Year Plan course, and am still working on Y1M1’s short story. I have no body of work I’m ready to publish in any form. I need to focus on my craft and production at this point, not the tech aspects of managing a website. I’m tech-inclined, too, and so easily get bogged down in the weeds of learning how to do it all myself.
I’m leaning toward pulling the plug on the whole thing, even selling the old domain. But there is also the question: do I want to complete the process to get the experience? Or is this a case of “hire a professional”?
Thanks for reading! It’s a bit long-winded, but hopefully another newbie like myself may get some help on this as well.
PS—If this is the wrong space/forum to post this, please let me know. Thanks.
