Link book reviews in newsletter to blog or to Goodreads?
I always include at least one book review or recommendation in my monthly newsletter and usually get good engagement on it. I typically share my rating, a brief summary of my thoughts, and maybe the opening paragraph of the full review, followed by a link to the full review.
The full reviews are posted on Goodreads, BookBub, and my author blog. I used to always link the review in the newsletter to the blog version of the full review, reasoning that anytime I can send people to my website, it’s a good thing. And I still believe that. However, for a few months, I linked to the full reviews on Goodreads instead because I was in the process of rebuilding my website and didn’t want to post full reviews on my old site only to turn around and re-post those reviews on the new site a few months later.
Now I’m wondering if I would be better off continuing to link the reviews in my newsletter to the full reviews on Goodreads rather than my blog. My subscribers already know about my website; a lot of them signed up for my newsletter there. If I send them to Goodreads instead, they can actively “like” my review there, which shares it in their feeds, which exposes my name and review style to more people than my blog would ever reach at this stage, especially since I don’t have comments or sharing enabled on my blog. My reviews on Goodreads do end with a call to subscribe to my newsletter on my website, so there’s the potential for new people to visit my website anyway.
Any thoughts on whether I should send people to my website or Goodreads for this particular function? If I’m using book reviews as a way to grow my audience, linking to Goodreads makes sense, but it’s hard to shake the feeling that I should always link back to my own site.
