Newsletter Query

A few months ago, I decided to try something different with my monthly newsletter. Instead of including my monthly writing within the body of the newsletter, I wrote a brief excerpt and then linked it to my website with a Keep Reading click. I had several reasons for giving this a try. To provide opportunity for my readers to write and share comments. To easily share my writing with others through social media buttons provided, if they desired. And for me to get a better idea of how many actually open and read my writing. Or in other words, the click rate.

Prior to my switch over I had an open rate average of 84%. Keep in mind I have a small email list less than 100; just getting started. After my switch over, I now average a 70% open rate, and a 31% click rate. Initially, it was discouraging to realize that my previous open rate, meant very little, since opening an email obviously quite different than reading the email. Now, I’m not sure, if I want to continue with the linking to my website or not? Does clicking a Keep Reading button a big deal to others? I think, it does give me a better picture of what kind of content my readers gravitate more to.

I always begin the newsletter with my writing to link to, and include any additional news, below that within the main newsletter.

I would love to hear if others take this approach or not? Or just your thoughts in general, pros or cons. Thank you.
