Non-openers

Ministry Newsletter discovery

A couple of days ago, I sent an email out to ‘non-openers’ of my newsletter list for my day job (we’re missionaries in Turkey) telling them to respond or they would be deleted from our newsletter list.

I got back SOOOO many emails from people begging for me to not delete them. That they read my emails every time they receive them.

👉 ✅One person informed me that their email provider uses a tracker-blocker. ✅👈 I sighed with frustration when I read that.

Author Newsletter deletions

Because back a few months ago, I deleted a bunch of non-opening subscribers email addresses on my author newsletter.

My purpose was to keep my costs lower and to not bump up to the next level of paid newsletter membership with KIT (when their prices went up).

(The differences of course are: I sent a series of emails to my author list subscribers and if they did not respond they were deleted. This time I sent a single email. And one is ministry and one is business.)

But in any event, when I used the KIT “non-opener” identification system to send emails to my non-openers, they misidentified a lot of openers—now I realize it was for this very thing. Tracker blockers. After the automation, my open rate went down by 15% after I unsubscribed the non-openers. I think tracker-blockers must even block click tracking.

Because the automation had a rule “if they open, keep them on the list,” since their server does not allow tracking—neither opening nor clicking was enough.

By the time I realized this, it was too late. Because of course, with KIT, I cannot automatically re-subscribe those I accidentally unsubscribed.

So live and learn. In fact, if YOU learn from me, that will be worth it.
