UPDATE: Off social?
11/20/25 update: The third episode of Writing Off Social horrified me. Its quotes about the damage and negative societal impact of social media—so now I have an ethical conflict with using Meta advertising…
Here’s one of the quotes:
“Yes, being able to quit is a privilege; many genuinely can't. But if you have the latitude to quit and don't, you are not supporting the less fortunate; you are only reinforcing the system in which many people are trapped.
“I am living proof that you can have a public life in media without social media accounts. Those of us with options must explore those options or they will remain only theoretical. Business follows money, so we who have options have power and responsibility.
“You, you, you have the affirmative responsibility to invent and demonstrate ways to live without the crap that is destroying society.
Quitting is the only way, for now, to learn what can replace our grand mistake”
“Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now.” Jaron Lanier (book is Free on KU)
Also the episode discusses another book that documents that both societal upheaval is CAUSED and FUELED by social media —and it’s a PURPOSEFUL effort.
So for advertising:
Option1) Goal is to get their interest and draw them off of social media with good fiction and fun resources
Option 2) Goal is to never use Social media advertising because money I’m giving them is the reason for the exploitation in the first place
I’ve finally started listening to the Writing Off Social podcast. I already was planning to go off social in 2026, and this helped me confirm my decision. Anyone else in this process?
