Segmenting Mail Lists

Does anyone segment their email subscriber list giving them an option for “new release announcements only” instead of being on the regular email list?

I can see that it might keep people on a list that otherwise would unsubscribe, but it seems that might not be fostering superfans. Maybe they wouldn’t be superfans in the first place.
