Should I stay on Instagram?

Context: I have been using Instagram since 2018 when my first book was published. At the time, it seemed like an easy way to promote my books. Bookstagram, which was essentially static, pretty pictures, was easy. It felt like I made author connections and sales just from doing that three times a week. Of course, as anyone on Instagram knows now, the algorithm shifted, and now it focuses on entertaining reels over most static content. I always had an email list, and since that point, I grew my email list primarily through giveaways, though a few people from IG joined.

I teach teenagers and see how addicted they are to social media. It worries me to continue to be on a platform that encourages them to watch videos instead of read a book.

I’ve tried to build/join reader groups on Goodreads, but that feels about as effective as splashing paint on a wall and hoping it turns into a beautiful painting.

I have a robust email newsletter, with 700 subscribers and an average 50% open rate and 10% click rate. However, I rarely, if ever, hear any replies to my emails (even with questions at the end).

I joined Substack recently because I guest post regularly there. Because of that connection and posting on notes, I steadily gain subscribers.

I plan on launching a Kickstarter in 2026, and from Thomas’ course, I know you need to have a launch team and author connections. I’ve run launches from Instagram, so I know how to do that, but I don’t know if that is worth the cost of constantly adding to the noise.

I also have limited funds. Enough to pay for basic author costs and cover design (I have a work exchange with my editor), and maybe run an Ad for $20 during the campaign.

Instagram Numbers:

Average likes per post: 15

Average comments: 3-5

Average Reel view: 200

My conversion rate is trickier to follow because linktre gives a limited unpaid view. I would say maybe 10? click throughs? Per month?

Anyway, if any of you have read this to the end and are willing to give me your opinion—thank you! I’m trying to plan for the New Year my actions.
