Book proposal competitor books

A book proposal is supposed to list competitors, and, I assume, why my book is different or better. I am writing Christian nonfiction for a general audience. How many competitor books do I need to buy and read? I downloaded one and read another, but I keep seeing books that talk about my topic. I can’t affrord to buy everything. What should I do? Thanks.
