How Many Developmental Edits?

If you pay for a developmental edit and then do the best you can to incorporate the feedback, how do you know, as an indie author, if you have improved the novel, or if you have created new problems elsewhere in the manuscript? Do you have the opportunity for back-and-forth with your editor, or does that require the equivalent of a second developmental edit?
