How necessary is an audiobook?
I’m considering creating an audiobook for my WIP, but I can’t afford to hire a professional, can’t do it myself (one pov character is male, and I can’t do male voices well), and don’t want to use AI.
A good friend volunteered to do it for me (for free, though I’d probably end up giving him a percentage of royalties or something), but he also doesn’t have any professional experience. I am going to make him do a test run to see how it sounds before agreeing to that, but I’m just unsure how “professional” of a sound I need. I’m kind of a perfectionist and don’t want anything that sounds amateurish or “homemade,” but I’m also writing for an audience that does a lot of family read-alouds and might not mind that….
So basically, I’m wondering, is it better to have a not-great audiobook or no audiobook at all? I want this novel to be available to audiobook-only readers, but I also don’t want to offer my audience a subpar product.
