I'm Terrible at Elevator Pitches!
When I get the opportunity to tell a stranger I have a book series launching next June, I get that dreaded question—”What do you write?” or “What are your books about?” Having worked on these books for over three years, you’d think the answer would come pretty easily, but nooooo! XD
Answering “what do you write?” with “Christian middle-grade fantasy” isn’t hard. But when asked what the books are about, the best thing I can spew in the moment is something like, “A young group of anthropomorphic animals rise up to save their world from tyrants.” It’s not the worst tagline, but something about it (or any similar pitch I say out loud) sounds lame! Could that just be beginner’s self-consciousness, or does it honestly sound lame?
Also, does anyone have advice for simply remembering what the pitch is? Yesterday I was asked what I write, and when I wanted to say what the series is about, all of a sudden every possible description sounded lame. So I didn’t elaborate on the series at all.😭
