Is this bad?

I knew my outside margins would be narrow-ish because of the need for a deep gutter for a 692 page book. Per my prior thread, my Bookvault proofs had narrow outside margins but no different than KDP or Ingram’s first prints.

The covers and interior were done by 100Covers so I figured they would be in the ballpark of “acceptable”. (newbie here, not always sure what “acceptable” is.)

Bookvault is the only POD that can do my hardback. I set up hardback and paperback with them because I wanted to order my personal paperbacks from them due to their good reputation. The paperbacks are not currently planned to be available for retail.

Anyway, Bookvault proofs were fine. The box full of hardbacks and paperbacks for sending to my supporters and advanced readers were NOT. Some of them were so close to the outside edge that the letters were shaved.

I contacted Bookvault and they agreed to reprint. Last night I got the reprints. They’re better (no shaved text) but still about 1/8 inch or more closer to the edge than the proofs. If the proofs had been this close, I would already have had 100Cover revise the interior. Now I have two boxes of books that don’t look like the proofs. (the 2nd box an improvement but…)

I’m posting an image here of the preprinted hardback. I don’t expect to sell many of these, but they are going to be over $35 to purchase retail (I’ll earn about $1.00) due to the costs. Would you have them redesigned?

I launch in less than a week. I can hold back the hardback from launch. Ebook, KDP and Ingram paperbacks are lined up. I’ll have to wait and see if I get complaints from any retail buyers from KDP or Ingram if their prints don’t match their proofs. I can’t change them now.

Here’s the “improved” hardback without changing 100Cover’s file - yet. (The reprinted paperback is about the same)

Would you have this reformated by 100Covers?
