Novel query or proposal for a Greek Mythology primer?
Hi everyone, I’m working on an alternative Greek Mythology primer similar to D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths or The Greek Gods by Evslin Evslin and Hoopes, but I’m telling the myths from a woman’s perspective. All the primary sources we have on Greek mythology were written by men, with a male interpretation and framing. I wondered how women might have told these stories differently. For example, did Hera (the goddess of marriage and guardian of women) interfere with Zeus’ conquests because she really was that spiteful and jealous, or was she trying to protect his victims? Did Athena punish Medusa or give her the means to protect herself?
So anyway my question is this: Do I finish the book and query with a letter as I would a novel, or would I put together a proposal with a few polished sample chapters like in nonfiction? It’s mythology, so obviously not nonfiction, exactly, but it’s not a retelling, either. I’m changing the framing and interpretation of motivations but using the same “events” or “facts” from the original myths and narrating them in an engaging but relatively straightforward manner, similar to the primers mentioned above.
Any thoughts or resources greatly appreciated!
