The US Copyright Office thinks I'm A.I.

The US Copyright office (cop-ad@loc.gov) challenged my copyright application because they think “some of the text in this work may have been generated by an artificial intelligence ("AI") program.” I’m so insulted.

Has anyone else run into this problem? Did protesting your innocence solve the problem? Do I need to get a testimonial from my very human editor?

Here’s the email:

Please respond to the questions below within 45 days and include the [THREAD ID], using the brackets, as part of your response. The [THREAD ID] is located below the Examiner’s signature block. The [THREAD ID] must be in the body of your response, NOT the subject line. If you put the [THREAD ID] in the subject line, we will not get your message.

I am reviewing your copyright application for the work identified in the subject line of this email. I need some clarification before I can continue my examination.

Based on our examination, some of the text in this work may have been generated by an artificial intelligence ("AI") program.

To be protected by copyright, a work must have been created by a human author. Material that is generated by an AI program does not satisfy this requirement, even if the material was generated in response to numerous and/or complex prompts entered by a human being. The Copyright Office will not register material generated by an AI program.

If some of the text in this work was generated by an AI program, please authorize the addition of a limitation statement to this application to exclude that material from the scope of your claim. This claim will cover the text you wrote, but it must exclude the "text generated by artificial intelligence."

Please note that we cannot proceed with registration until the claim has been limited to the copyrightable material created by the human author(s).

If the situation is other than as described, please explain.

Once I receive your response, I can resume my examination of your work or may have more questions.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The THREAD ID appearing at the end of this message MUST be included within the body of your response in order for your message to be properly routed. When replying to this message, make sure to copy the whole THREAD ID, including brackets, and paste it into the body of your response, preferably after the greeting. DO NOT include the THREAD ID in the subject line of your reply. If you put the THREAD ID in the subject line, we will not get your message.

Failure to comply exactly with our instructions will result in your email not being connected to your application, and if we do not hear from you within 45 days, your case will be closed without further correspondence from us.
