Why is square asking me for an EIN?

Did anyone who has registered as an LLC also get an EIN? I didn’t think EINs were necessary, but now Square won’t seem to let me get a POS system (for in person sales at conferences) without an EIN, which is $250 on the IRS website — yikes. I’d love to hear others’ experiences about this. Thank you!
