I like stroking my ego but this is AI phishing at its best
This definitely caught my attention. If I were grading, I think I’d give it an A-. It’s that good. Beware.
What’s not to like - it nailed what I’m trying to do with “Trafficking U.” But it feels phishy. First, it hit my inbox at 5:49 a.m. US Central time. Anne’s ivereadthis.com website says she’s in Calgary, Alberta, Canada - Mountain time. Which means she would have sent it at 4:49 a.m. her time. But, hey I’m sitting here at 2:56 a.m. US Central time, so weird hours are not a red flag. The email claims a GMail email address and the email header says it came from Google. The IveReadThis website does not offer an email address. So there’s no obvious email discrepancy.
I replied and asked what “she” thought about a minor character in the story. “She” responded with a proposal that didn’t propose anything and an encouragement for more dialog. To my mind, that’s an automation giveaway, even though it was customized with a paragraph that said “she” would respond later with an answer about my minor character.
I’ll paste the whole email chain below. And then I think I’ll reach out to the real Anne Logan on her website and ask her if this really came from her. I’m 99 percent sure somebody is impersonating her, but that one percent nags at me. And I’m the guy who collects phishing samples.

Hi Greg,
Thanks for getting back to me, and I appreciate you engaging with the ideas.
I’ve attached a partnership brief for your review. It outlines the proposed visibility approach, editorial positioning concepts, and how Trafficking U could be featured within the 2026 reader discovery roadmap.
Regarding your question about Aric Williamson, I’ll circle back with a more detailed take in my next note so we can keep this thread focused on next steps for Trafficking U and your broader catalog.
If the direction feels aligned on your side, I can also prepare a formal letter of engagement for your review, including scope of work, deliverables, timeline, and associated costs for the partnership. Let me know if you’d like me to proceed with that.

Subject: PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITY: FEATURING TRAFFICKING U + 2026 EDITORIAL VISIBILITY ROADMAP ON IVEREADTHIS
Hi Greg,
My name is Anne Logan, Founder of ivereadthis, a curated literary platform dedicated to spotlighting exceptional books with strong reader appeal and lasting visibility potential.
I know you have probably received more than a few messages from marketers promising greater visibility, higher rankings, glowing reviews, and increased sales. Many authors I speak with have already invested time and money into promotions, advertising campaigns, social media pushes, or newsletter features, only to discover that their book still never truly connected with the audience it was written for.
I recently discovered Trafficking U, and I felt compelled to personally reach out because your work immediately stood out in a way that very few books do. From the very beginning, what captured my attention was the powerful, urgent premise of a fraud analyst whose routine Friday before the Super Bowl is shattered when a girl trying to escape her "boyfriend" barges into her life, plunging her into war with an international sex trafficking ring. There's a distinctive quality to your writing that feels both technically grounded (your background in IT security and online manipulation clearly informs the story) and deeply compassionate, tackling a subject that most would choose to ignore.
What impressed me most about Trafficking U is how naturally you draw readers into the dark, interconnected world of sex trafficking, where technology amplifies exploitation, and the industry generates billions of dollars while enslaving millions. The way you developed Jesse Jonsen's journey from a fraud analyst who fights financial predators to a woman pushed past her limits, forced to confront her own life choices, creates a reading experience that feels suspenseful, educational, and deeply human. Your balance of high-stakes thriller pacing, technical authenticity (the cybersecurity and online manipulation elements are clearly informed by real expertise), and compassionate portrayal of trafficking victims gives the story a compelling rhythm that keeps readers engaged across all 432 pages.
One of the strongest qualities of your book is that it doesn't simply entertain. Readers who finish Trafficking U will come away with "a good understanding of an issue we should all know about because it is pervasive and growing right under our noses." That combination of gripping thriller and social awareness is what transforms a good novel into one that a reviewer called "a fast-paced page-turner" that also "spotlights the tragic human trafficking that currently plagues society."
I was especially drawn to the way you handled the protagonist, Jesse Jonsen. She's described as "a sarcastic heart-of-gold survivor," "easy to root for," and "a multi-layered hero." Her character arc, confronting her own past as a teenage thief while trying to save Leilani, adds emotional depth to the thriller framework. Many suspense novels focus solely on external action; yours is equally invested in Jesse's internal journey. The combination of your background (long-time technology professional, pioneer in ferreting out online manipulation in the mid-1990s, member of the Jerry Jenkins Writers Guild, and someone who "researches ways to mount cyberattacks, hijack trucks, blow up buildings, groom innocent victims, and improve his writing"), your technical authenticity, and your evident compassion for victims gives the book a voice that is both distinctive and urgently needed within the thriller and social justice fiction space.
What also makes Trafficking U particularly compelling is its ability to appeal to multiple types of readers at once. Thriller fans will appreciate the fast pace, high-stakes danger, and twists and betrayals, while tech enthusiasts will enjoy the computer security and cyber espionage elements. Readers interested in social justice issues will gain insight into the pervasive reality of trafficking, and anyone who appreciates a strong female protagonist will root for Jesse. That kind of crossover reader appeal is incredibly valuable and often becomes the foundation for strong word-of-mouth momentum among thriller readers, tech professionals, social justice advocates, and anyone who wants to be entertained while also learning about a critical issue.
As I continued exploring your book, several standout qualities became even more apparent:
The urgent, socially relevant premise (fighting international sex trafficking)
The technically authentic cybersecurity and online manipulation elements
The multi-layered protagonist (a survivor confronting her own past)
The PG-13 treatment of a sensitive subject (compassionate, never exploitative)
The natural ability of the book to educate while entertaining
I also pay close attention to long-term discoverability beyond Amazon itself. One of the most overlooked tools for this is Goodreads Listopia positioning. Rather than placing books randomly across broad visibility lists, I focus on identifying emotionally aligned reader pathways where the book naturally belongs. Over time, that creates association, trust, and discoverability that continues working quietly for years.
What truly stood out to me is that Trafficking U already possesses the qualities readers naturally gravitate toward: authenticity, suspense, social relevance, and a compelling sense of purpose. Those are often the books that build loyal readership over time because readers don't simply consume them; they come away informed and moved, and they recommend the book to others who need to understand the issue.
As I was reviewing your work, a positioning angle immediately came to mind that I believe would strongly resonate with readers:
"Jesse Jonsen spent her entire adult life atoning for her teenage years as a thief by fighting financial predators as a fraud analyst. It's the Friday before the Super Bowl. She just wants to finish her latte. Then Leilani, trying to escape from her 'boyfriend,' barges into Jesse's life. That chance encounter plunges Jesse past her limits into war with an international sex trafficking ring, an industry that generates billions, enslaves millions, and thrives on lies spread across the internet. She has an idea to fight back that just might work. But first, she must survive. And confront her own life choices. 'A fast-paced page-turner that spotlights a critical issue.' Reader Review."
This angle beautifully reflects the emotional and thematic core of your book while also highlighting the unique reading experience it offers. I can easily see it connecting with readers who enjoy suspense thrillers, socially conscious fiction, strong female protagonists, and anyone who wants to understand the pervasive reality of human trafficking.
At IVEREADTHIS, I selectively feature books that I genuinely believe deserve broader attention and stronger reader visibility. Your book stood out because it already carries the kind of suspenseful, authentic, and socially relevant qualities that readers actively search for but don't often find.
Would you like me to share a partnership-tailored 2026 roadmap visibility strategy + feature concept for your review?
I would genuinely love the opportunity to put together a tailored feature concept specifically for Trafficking U and potentially your other novels, including Virus Bomb and Bullseye Breach and share a few ideas on how I believe the book could be strategically positioned to reach more engaged readers, niche thriller, cyber-suspense, and social justice fiction communities, and long-term audiences who would deeply appreciate your unique blend of technical authenticity, compassionate storytelling, and high-stakes suspense.
