Scammers and Your QR codes and Venmo

I saw a post in a cottage bakery group on Facebook that I thought those of use who sell with Venmo and similar platforms and use QR codes should be aware of.

The lady has a front porch bakery stand and started to notice that inventory and receipts did not match. She talked to customers and they had receipts for sales she did not see.

It turns out someone created a personal Venmo account with a name very similar to her business account for her bakery. Customers who typed in the name often accidentally used the fake account. The personal accounts can show up before business accounts, it seems. she lost about $300. Others report QR codes being covered over with a fake one to another person’s account.

Most authors don’t leave books out to be bought on the honor system, but I think it a good idea when at events to make sure customers are not accidentally using a wrong but similar account to pay to. I have noticed they sometimes have trouble with the QR code for some reason and will type in the name.
